9 of the Best Adoptive Dads in Anime

Happy Father's Day!

Buddy Daddies taking Miri to school

We’ve seen tons of dads in anime of varying parental quality. Just look at the difference between Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’s Maes Hughes and Shou Tucker. Some are the very embodiment of an excellent father. Shou Tucker on the other hand… let’s just say he isn’t something to aspire to.

But what about all the adoptive dads out there? Some of the best dads around are the guys who jump headfirst into parenting when a child needs an adult in their life.

Human or devil, construct or fantasy, these adoptive anime dads are some of the best dads around. So let's get into things!

Loid Forger

SPY x FAMILY

Loid carries Anya home in SPY x FAMILY

One of the best adoptive dads, hands down, is Loid Forger, an extraordinarily skilled spy otherwise known only as Twilight. This renowned spy might have adopted Anya to fulfill his latest mission, but a small, loving family is very quickly formed. And there has never been a more doting father than this master of disguise.

Loid may be protective and doting right from the get-go, but being thrown into fatherhood with little warning definitely means there’s a learning curve. Each time Loid’s parenting skills are tested, either by circumstance or the precocious little one’s antics, he rises to the occasion, never afraid to admit when he’s been wrong and make things up to little Anya.

golem with child somali and the forest spirit episode 1

Not every father is human, such as Golem, a constructed protector of nature. When Golem runs into a young human girl named Somali, he takes her under his wing, soon turning into her father figure. Of course, Golem isn’t trying to be her father, merely a protector until he can find a suitable human or two who can act as appropriate parents.

But this ancient automaton is soon called “Father” by Somali anyway. All the trials and tribulations of parenthood loom before him despite not understanding how to deal with children, what young humans need or the emotions they feel. More importantly, Somali teaches Golem the most important lessons of all: the meaning of love and family.

Kazuki and Rei

Buddy Daddies

Buddy Daddies Sunset

Kazuki and Rei are assassins. When a foolproof mission goes wildly awry, the pair find themselves bringing home a four-year-old girl named Miri. They should return Miri to her mother, but Kazuki is only too happy to play a fatherly role. Even Rei’s icier heart melts in the presence of the innocent girl.

Turns out, raising a four year old is way tougher than assassinating people. Their careers are at risk, sure. Assassin work doesn’t exactly come with days off or work-from-home options, after all. But more important to the pair is providing the youngster with a perfectly ordinary, wonderful childhood. And Kazuki and Rei stop at nothing to make that happen.

letty and pip dragon goes house hunting

Poor Letty was kicked out of home and now spends his time roaming the world with his new elf friend (and self-proclaimed real estate agent) Dearia, trying to find a suitable home. Things get even more complicated when his travels bring him across an abandoned egg. Suddenly, a chick hatches and imprints on him, convinced the giant dragon is his father.

Despite Letty’s distinct lack of housing and not knowing how to raise any child, let alone one of a different species, he does his best to protect the little guy. Letty is determined to do right by Pip and be the best dragon dad a Hraesvelgr (a giant eagle) chick could ever want. Not only does he have to make sure Pip has plenty of fresh snow to nestle in, he needs to protect him from the creatures and people who’d eat or otherwise bring harm to the little guy!

Shin Karino

Kotaro Lives Alone

Shin is a manga artist. His next-door neighbor? A four-year-old boy named Kotaro who seems to be living in the apartment all on his own. The kiddo’s odd and not in a cutesy, little kid way. Kotaro always speaks formally and he has no parents or other relatives to speak of.

Little by little, Shin begins to understand the young boy and his hard past. The bachelor slowly begins to be Shin’s family, going to school events, accompanying him to bathhouses and errands and generally watching out for his wellbeing. No matter how hard the situation, Shin’s there for Kotaro, trying to do what's best for Kotaro amid difficult, heartbreaking circumstances.

maou alas and emi in the devil is a part timer season 2

Who’s the most difficult person to view as a doting dad? Why, the literal devil, of course! Sadao — former devil and recent denizen of our own world — finds himself unexpectedly thrust into parenthood. Unlike most others on this list, Sadao didn’t stumble upon a child who was lonely or alone. Alas Ramus, the child in question, declared that Sadao was her father. And her mother? None other than the mighty hero and Sadao’s once worst enemy, Emi.

Yet, Sadao quickly takes to parenthood, being the father Alas Ramus thinks of him as. He’ll protect her, no matter how great or fearsome their enemy is. And shared custody? He can navigate that with ease (if with frustration). Alas has nothing to fear with the mighty (and doting) devil as her father.

zagan and valefor an archdemons dilemma

Zagan is a much-feared sorcerer and a bit of a recluse on top of that. Fatherhood comes in a roundabout way for him. The young dragon girl Valefor needs to grow stronger, and who better to steal power from than Zagan, a sorcerer considered one of the 13 archdemons?

What Valefor really needs, though, is a loving family. And Zagan is determined to do right by her. He moves her into his castle, makes sure she knows she’s wanted, pilfers books from ancient ruins for her and even teaches her how to get revenge on her enemies properly, just like every good father does.

Father Shiro Fujimoto

Blue Exorcist

shiro fujimoto blue exorcist season 1

Father Shiro Fujimoto is one of the most powerful exorcists in existence. This means Satan is constantly after him, trying to possess his body and enter our realm. It also means that Father Fujimoto is a perfect guardian for Satan’s son, Rin, and Rin’s brother Yukio.

Not only is Father Fujimoto a wonderful exorcist mentor and father figure, he’s willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for Rin, giving his life in order to protect the boy.

And there you have it, a non-exhaustive list of some of anime’s best adoptive dads. Did your favorites make the list? Let me know in the comments.
